Getting a Montana Learner’s Permit

Who Needs a Learner’s Permit

Any person wishing to operate a motor vehicle on the open road in the state of Montana that has never had a driver’s license before or had a license that has been expired for a given amount of time.

How Old do I Need to be to get a Learner’s Permit?

The applicant must be 14 ½ years of age or older to receive an instruction permit, 16 years of age or older to receive a restricted license (sometimes referred to as a learners permit.)

Requirements to Get a Learner’s Permit

For an instruction permit a person must be at least 14 1/2 years of age and enrolled in a driver’s education class. Or for a restricted license (learners) be 16 years of age or older, be able to pass a written exam and a vision test.

Driving with a Montana Learner’s Permit

When issued a learner’s permit the new driver must always be accompanied by an adult 18+ years of age that is a parent, legal guardian, or someone authorized by the parent/guardian. The driver must always wear a seat belt and make sure all passengers do as well. The driver must refrain from obtaining any traffic violations or drug/alcohol related offenses. With the step 2 license the driver is permitted to have up to 3 unrelated passengers in the vehicle unless being supervised by another driver 18+ years of age.
