Getting Your Wisconsin Learner’s Permit

Anyone learning to drive who is 15 1/2 years old or older must first get an instruction permit from the WI DMV. The instructional permit, which will have your photograph, is valid for one year.

Requirements

You must be 15 1/2 years old or older to get your Class D permit. You will be required to provide proof of citizenship, name, date of birth, identity and residency. A complete list of acceptable documentation can be found here. If you are under 18, you must be enrolled in a state approved driver education program. Your license application must be signed by the instructor and you need to state the course within 60 days of getting your permit.

You will also be required to have parent or guardian approval and proof of insurance under certain circumstances if you are under 18. You MUST be enrolled in some form of a school or school equivalency program to apply for your license.

Restrictions

Anyone with a Class D instructional permit can only drive with a licensed driver age 19 or oder if they are a qualified instructor, parent, guardian or spouse. You can also driver with someone 21 years of age or older if you have written authorization from a parent or guardian.

If you are going to driver at night, the driving must be 25 years old or older and sitting next to you.

Requirements For Getting Your Probationary License

If you are under 18, you need 30 hours of driving experience, 10 hours of which must be at night, to get your probationary license.
