Obtaining a New York Learners Permit to Drive
You must be 16 years old to obtain a NY learners permit to learn to drive in New York State. Driving in New York is a right, not a privilege, and comes with certain restrictions regarding when you can drive in New York and who may be in the car with you. How To Get Your Learners Permit
To get your learners permit in New York, follow these steps:
- Apply for the permit. You will need to pay all applicable permit and license fees. The NY DMV takes check, cash, money order and credit cards.
- Pass your vision test
- Pass your written test. The best way to do this is by studying the manual and reviewing the $CSLINK prior to taking your test.
- Practice for your road test
- Take a DMV approved driver’s education course
- Make an appointment to take your road test. You can do this online on the DMV’s website.
- Pass your road test – get your license!
What You Need To Know
- If you are under the age of 18, your parent or legal guardian will be required to sign a content form for you to receive your learner’s permit.

- Bring your social security card.
- Take the written test. An appointment is not required but you should arrive at least 30 minutes before the office closing time. Check with your local office to find out what time they are open until.
