Who Needs an Idaho License?

Any and all Idaho residents that are at least 15 years of age that wishes to operate a motor vehicle within the state that has never had a driver’s license before or had one from another state that is two or more years expired. Without a currant Idaho driver’s license it is illegal for residents to operate a motor vehicle within the state.

h2. What are the Requirements for Getting a License?

To receive a full privilege Idaho driver’s license a person must either:

  • complete a written, road, and vision test. As well as work their way through the licensing process
  • Have a driver’s license from another state that has not been expired 6 or more months

The licensing process includes all of the tests, driver’s education course completion, a fee, and proper documentation.

Questions I need to take to get a License?

You will be required to take a series of tests when applying for any type of driver’s license. The testing process is divided into three parts:

  • The Written Test is a minimum of 40 multiple choice questions and will cover all traffic laws, rules and regulations found in the Digest of Idaho Motor Vehicle Laws
  • The Vision exam is given to all drivers’ license applicants for any type of license
  • You must answer correctly 34 out of the 40 questions provided.

Taking a Driver’s Education Course

New drivers in the state of Idaho under the age of 17 must complete a state approved driver’s education course. These courses are offered by local schools for anyone ages 14 ½ to 21. It is not necessary to be a student of the school to partake of the driving course. It is also offered by commercial driving schools licensed by the DMV. Preparing for the Written Test and what to Bring

To best prepare for the written test first obtain an Idaho driver’s handbook and study each section carefully. It may also be a good idea to take some practice tests which are available online. There are several things that you will need to bring to your test including documents such as social security card and proof of residency.

What does a Driver’s License Cost?

To obtain a driver’s license in the state of Idaho you must pay a fee of $30 for testing plus $3 for the written test and $15 fort the road test. A fee of $30 is required for renewing a 4 year license and a fee of $55 for an 8 year license.

Proof of Insurance

Proof of liability insurance is a big must for taking the road skills test. If you intend to drive your own vehicle you must provide proof of insurance for the vehicle that you intend to drive for your test. You must always carry proof of insurance in your vehicle at all times when driving.

Taking the Drivers Test

Try to remain as calm as possible while taking the road test. Nerves are one of the biggest contributing factors to fails on the road test portion of getting a driver’s license. Check all of your documents ahead of time to be sure that you have the correct ones and that none are missing. Besides all of the documents, to take the road test the applicant will also need a good working vehicle and proof of liability insurance for that vehicle. It is best to practice as much as possible with an instructor or other licensed adult in the vehicle intended for testing before attempting the actual road test.
