Obtaining Your Connecticut Driver’s License

Minimum Age

You must be 16 years old to receive a CT driver’s license. You also need to be 16 to receive a Connecticut learner’s permit. If you are 18 or older you do not need a learner’s permit to practice driving.

Obtaining Your License

If you are over the age of 18 and have a license from another state, you will need to apply for a Connecticut driver’s license within 30 days of moving to CT. You will have to have a non-expired license from another state and take a vision test to transfer your license. You may need to take a written test as well, so make sure you have a copy of the $CSLINK.

What To Bring

Identification

You will need to bring your out-of-state driver’s license, as well as a copy of a certified birth certificate. Photocopies are not acceptable. You will also need supporting documentation, such as a marriage certificate, if your name has changed.

If your license doesn’t have a photo, be prepared to show your US Passport to receive your license. If you are not a citizen of the US, please see the section below.

Verification of Residency

You need to prove you are a Connecticut resident to get your CT driver’s license. A utility bill, mortgage statement, rental agreement or another else with your current address postmarked within 90 days are acceptable.

Social Security Number

You will need to provide your SS# when applying for your driver’s license. If you do not have a social security number, you must obtain a letter from the SSA explaining why you are ineligible.

Connecticut Driver’s License Fees

The application fee for your license is $40 (cash, check or money order, no credit cards). The license fee is either $66 or $77, depending on how long you want the license for.

Obtaining a License If You Are Not A US Citizen

This is direct from the CT DMV:

If you are not a citizen of the United States you will be required to show proof of your legal status in this country.

  • Holders of a B1 or B2 Visitor’s Visa are not eligible for a driver license or identification card unless a valid USCIS Employment Authorization Card and verification of an application pending for Lawful Permanent Residence is provided.
  • Foreign students with an F1 Visa status must show USCIS document I-20 and verification of current enrollment in a Connecticut school.
  • J1 Visa holders are required to show USCIS document DS2019.
  • H1B Visa holders are required to show a valid USCIS Employment Authorization Card and an employee verification letter from a Connecticut employer.
  • All applicants will be verified through USCIS for legal status before a driver license or identification card will be issued.
